Seattle in '01 Shirt

Image of Seattle in '01 Shirt

Although they didn't reach the World Series, the 2001 Seattle Mariners should be considered among the best teams ever in baseball. They finished with a 116-46 record (.716 winning percentage), tying a major league record set by the 1906 Cubs for most wins in a regular season. After losing their top player, Alex Rodriguez to the largest free agent deal ever signed in the off season prior, the Mariners couldn't be stopped as they finished first in runs scored and first in runs allowed and won an outstanding 59 games but more than 4 runs. Led by the AL Rookie of the year and MVP winner, Ichiro Suzuki swept through the league with 242 hits, batting .350 and swiping 56 bases. The Mariners also got major contributions from veterans Edgar Martinez, Bret Boone, Mike Cameron and John Olerud. On the mound, the Mariners shut their opponents down with breakout star Freddie Garcia, Jamie Moyer, Aaron Sele and Paul Abbott.
